THE WATER ( PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF POLLUTION ) ACT , 1974 ( THE WATER ACT ) The Water Act was enacted with the purpose / object of prevention & control of water pollution in India . It aims to maintain and / or restore the wholesome nature of water for the establishment of Boards and to vest them with such powers so as to enable them to carry out the purposes of this Act . The Water Act was followed by the Water ( Prevention and Control of Pollution ) Rules , 1975 and the Water ( Prevention and Control of Pollution ( Procedure for Transaction of Business ) Rules , 1975 . The provisions of the Act shall have effect , notwithstanding anything contained to the contrary in any other enactment .
